Day 6 -- Girls CAN & Water Day

Group 1 Eva Cheung 3S (5)
Today was such a hectic but fun day. One of the best parts was meeting some successful women in different types of professions, such as engineering and sports. Getting a chance to communicate and to learn from them was really a valuable experience which I would never forget. Then, we went to the Sunfest in the downtown area which was quite crowded. There were lots of food and market stalls selling a large variety of food and products. I learned more about the Canadian culture and got the chance to interact with more local people. They are always nice and helpful.

Group 2 Gigi Cheng 3S (2)
The Sunfest was absolutely memorable to me, as we were able to experience the cultural diversity in Canada through tasting various kinds of scrumptious Canadian snacks and other delicacies from different parts of the world. But what really inspired me today was the Girls CAN rotation stations activity. Listening to the personal experiences of different female leaders in the community reminded me that, even though women are often stereotyped as both physically and academically less capable than men at work, that doesn’t mean women cannot and should not do what men do. Instead, we should always keep in mind that our gender is not to be treated as a disadvantage, but as a gift to be treasured and embraced. Therefore, let us all believe in our potentials, remember the words “Girls CAN” and strive to make a difference.

Group 3 Janice Hung 3T (18)
The most memorable part of today was the Girls Can activity. We visited the Faculty of Engineering in the Western Campus and listened to the sharing of four successful women leaders in the auditorium. I learnt a lot about how technology helps improve physiotherapy outcomes and what great things women can do in society. It was really meaningful and inspiring. I learned about different jobs that women can do in society and was convinced that women can actually achieve a lot, including their dreams, careers and all sorts of things in life.

6 days lapsed in the blink of an eye, we are already on day 6 but today was very special. We visited the Western Engineering lab and there we witnessed great people inventing brand new equipment and technology, aiming to make people’s life better. We were incredibly inspired and motivated to follow their example- to do our best in our way and contribute for improvement in people’s life in the future. Moreover, we had an unforgettable visit to the famous Sunfest today with a perfectly sunny but breezy weather. We had a chance to taste Poutine, also to feel the relaxing atmosphere within the festival. We had an incredible time meeting different welcoming Canadian as well as immersing fully in the Canadian culture!

Today was an extremely exciting day. We first had different activities on the topic ‘Girls CAN’. We met guests, such as a CEO of a hospital, who shared their insights on leadership with us. I was amazed by the programmes and robots originated from the students here, especially the headset which could detect one’s brainwaves.
We also went to the Sunfest, which I had been anticipating. The place was very crowded but at the same time filled with Canadian colors and culture. We got removable tattoos on our wrists and enjoyed snacks. It was definitely a joyous occasion.

Group 6 Ellen Chan 3T (4)
The topic today is ‘Girls Can’. Girls are capable, can make a difference, and can even change the world for the better . Through the sharing of accomplished women from various industries in Canada, including Canadian volleyball player, Rebecca Pavan, the President and CEO of St. Joseph’s Health Care London, Dr. Kernaghan, and registered dietician and home economist, Dr. Matthews, we acknowledged that girls are not only limited to some typical occupations. Instead, we are all capable of anything where our interest lies. By turning our passion and confidence into motivation, we, girls can all be outstanding leaders in the community.
After the water day, we went to the annual Sunfest, a music festival containing elements of Canadian cultures. There were booths selling traditional Canadian clothing, accessories, oriental tapestries, dream catchers and offering hennaing. Dancers were dancing energetically and enthusiastically to Canadian music on the stage. We strongly felt the charisma and charm of London! We also had poutine, big-‘mack’ fries, hamburgers, hot dog, burrito, churros and funnel cake to end our fruitful day.

Group 7 Ariel So 3S (27)
It was water day today. We and the counsellors enjoyed the afternoon with plenty of water. Splashing and screaming, we threw sponges and water balloons at each other during the game. As it was the first time for me to experience such thrill, I was on cloud nine.
Later in the evening, we went to the Sunfest, which allowed me to feel the Canadian culture. The performances and bazaars selling Canadian crafts such as dream catchers were impeccable. We also tried an iconic and scrumptious Canadian food, poutine. I hope I could attend the festival again and I long for the Nigeria Falls trip tomorrow.

Day 6 of our trip is yet another amazing day! We started our day off with Girls CAN, which is a rotation station where we met inspiring female leaders, such as a dietician who taught us the importance of balancing our meals, a teacher who taught us that teaching is not just limited to the classroom but also out of it, and more.
During the activity, we also visited the biomechatronics laboratory in the main campus. We spoke to students working on different projects that use mechanics and electronics to help people in need. We were also taught the importance of realising that women can do the things that men can do equally. Realising that we can step into once male-dominated fields is extremely inspiring as well.
Next, we had our next activity – water day! After changing into suitable clothes, we engaged in different water-filled activities such as sponge tag, drip-drip drop, and more. Everyone ended up getting soaked at the end of the session, and it was extremely fun! Then, the graduates of Brescia gave us a brief introduction to their school, and we learnt about the history and the programs that Brescia has to offer.
Finally, we went to the Sunfest, which is a funfair where we got to taste different kinds of food and shop at different stalls. The Sunfest celebrates the coming of summer and we experienced the thrill of going to a festival which enables us to enjoy music, food and shopping at the same time! It was truly a magical experience.

Day 5 -- Understanding Differences

Group 1 Samantha Wong 3S (30) Canada is a beautiful country with rich traditions and cultural heritage. Today, we went to the Fanshawe Pioneer Village. We experienced different activities such as feeding roosters, trying out the traditional way of printing, and processing wool into yarn. It was meaningful because we would not be able to have these experiences in Hong Kong. We were also very lucky and blessed with the fine weather during our visit We got on the bus just right before it started pouring heavily. There was a power suspension in the university as cables were damaged by fallen trees in the thunderstorm. We had to take cold showers. But this experience was unique! We understood that hot water supply is very precious and we should try our very best to conserve environment in order to ensure enough water supply for everyone on earth. Group 2 Janice Wong 3L (31) On the fifth day in Canada, we started off our day with a swimming session. We played games and had lots o

Day 10 -- Goal Setting

Group 1 Samantha Wong 3S (30) The weather of the today was sunny and just perfect for an outing, making our visit to the Kustermans Berry Farm a very pleasant experience. The farm is not only the place where berries grow, but also home to animals such as ponies, pigs, sheeps and more. Our visit began with berry-picking. The blueberries were fresh and large. They looked so juicy that we all couldn’t help packing our plastic boxes with berries.  We then headed to play on the swing, zip-line and even tried to ride on a pony! Riding on a pony was the most exciting activity, and also my favourite part of today. I had never ridden a pony before. I was a bit scared at first since I worried that the horse would lose its balance due to the weight and fell. However, it turned out to be a fun experience. I even took some pictures with the pony. All in all, we enjoyed visiting the farm a lot, and we couldn’t wait to taste our very first pack of self-picked blueberries! G roup 2 Cherian Leu
